Nobody likes emergencies, and when it comes to dental emergencies, chances are it is going to be uncomfortable!

And, as is the way with most emergencies, dental emergencies can occur at any time of the day, so you must have a dental team on hand, who can provide prompt treatment to get you out of discomfort and back on track in no time at all!

At Spa Dental, we are known for our cosmetic dental work, but can also offer our patients an emergency dentist Sydney should they need one! We aim to see you within 24 hours of you contacting our clinic and have specially reserved spots in our schedule throughout the day solely for dental emergencies. Great!

So, what are some of the signs that you have a dental emergency on your hands? Here, our emergency dentist Sydney provides a list of urgent symptoms to look out for.

Discomfort

Dental discomfort is never a good sign, especially if it is distracting you from working, sleeping and eating. And, irrespective of whether or not it comes on suddenly or gradually, you will need to see our emergency dentist Sydney right away!

Discomfort to this level is typical of an abscess, a cracked filling or an impacted tooth.

Swelling

Swelling to the face, under the jaw, or anywhere in the mouth can signify a serious dental problem. In most cases, this issue will be either an abscess or a problem with an impacted tooth. Regardless of the cause, if you notice any abnormal swelling (whether it is uncomfortable or not), you will need to see a member of the emergency team as soon as possible.

Bleeding

Dental bleeding is common if you have recently had a trauma such as a car accident, have fallen off a bike or have undertaken surgery in the mouth such as dental extraction.

However, if there is an abnormal amount of bleeding and if after 20 minutes of applying a clean gauze to the site of the bleed, it is not slowing down, then you need to see our team to have the wound assessed and either stitched or glued to prevent further blood loss.

Lost fillings or crowns

If you have a filling or crown then, at some point, this will likely come loose. And it is an unfortunate reality that in most cases a loose or lost filling or crown will be quite uncomfortable.

But if you are brushing your teeth and you spit out your restorative when you are finished, aim to keep hold of it and contact our team immediately for an emergency appointment. Delaying having a restorative refitted can result in decay setting in or tooth cracking.

Broken or chipped teeth

In a similar vein to a lost filling or a crown, a broken or chipped tooth can introduce bacteria underneath the enamel which can lead to decay, or, depending on the location, it can cause a dental abscess to form.

And as the treatment for a broken or chipped tooth is typically a composite filling, this is not a tough choice to make!
