Plaque – ways to reduce it and why our dentist doesn’t like it at Spa Dental
You have heard about it on TV adverts and from dental teams since you were very young, but now it is time to learn all there is to learn about plaque.
Plaque is one of the worst things that can happen to your teeth. Of course, after you have had a meal or have had a long day at work, having some plaque on your teeth is normal. You may even have some plaque on your teeth as you read this; run your tongue over your teeth and see if you can feel it. It may feel rough, furry or even sticky. It is just food debris left behind; but if it is left to its own devices, it can have a devastating impact on your oral health.
At Spa Dental, we take oral health very seriously and as plaque is one of the biggest threats to a good, healthy set of teeth, our dentist Sydney will always aim to remove all of it from your teeth and teach you how to keep your teeth clean too. We also have a hygienist on site, should your plaque be a bit more stubborn to remove. Perfect!
But how can you prevent plaque from causing havoc on your teeth and gums? Our dentist Sydney provides the following guide.
Sugar
OK, time to go back to basics!
Sugar left on the teeth becomes plaque, and it does so faster due to the bacteria in your mouth breaking it down. And so, the first tip from our dentist Sydney on how to reduce plaque in your mouth is to cut out as much sugar as possible.
If you have eaten a lot of sugar, such as a slice of cake at a birthday party, you can use a travel toothbrush to keep your teeth clean and to remove the sugar before it starts to become sticky.
Diet
How is diet different from sugar when it comes to preventing plaque?
Soft foods, like bread, can also get stuck in between your teeth and can cause plaque and bacteria to form in tough to reach places.
Once again, this can be alleviated with immediate brushing and can be lessened if you incorporate harder foods into your diet. For more advice on how you can alter your diet to help your teeth, talk to our team.
Hygiene
Brushing your teeth twice a day is extremely important when it comes to removing plaque and bacteria.
We also recommend that you floss or failing that, use interdental brushes to reach those areas in between and behind teeth. You should also use mouthwashes too, to keep bacterial numbers down and the plaque off your teeth.
Dental trips
Finally, regular appointments to see our team at Spa Dental in Sydney are vital for the removal of plaque; we have tools and equipment that can remove stubborn plaque, which will improve the appearance of your teeth, while also keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Ensuring any repercussions from lingering food debris are kept to a minimum.
