FAQs about dental implants answered
Are you considering having oral implants fitted?
At Spa Dental Sydney, we have helped hundreds of patients to restore their smiles using dental implants Sydney and are always happy to meet with and advise patients on the correct options when it comes to getting that striking smile that they deserve.
But we suspect that before you rush off to contact our team relating to the fitting of dental implants Sydney that you have some questions. In the following brief article, we aim to answer these questions by responding to common queries that we are asked about oral implants.
What are oral implants?
When most people think of dental implants Sydney, they think of the prosthetic tooth or teeth that are attached to them, which is an understandable mistake.
But oral implants are small, titanium posts, which physically resemble screws and can be fitted to your jaw and left to fuse with the surrounding bone. The most commonly used type of implant is an endosteal implant, but there are other types, including subperiosteal, zygomatic, and mini implants.
How are oral implants fitted?
When we fit oral implants, we will choose the right location for them, depending on the gap that needs to be filled and the density of the jawbone.
We numb the gum and make some precise incisions, which are then used to expose the bone underneath. If you do not have a vacant socket due to a recent extraction, we will drill a hole in your jaw and then fit the implant.
Once we are happy that it is placed securely, we will sew the gum line up using stitches.
How long does it take for them to heal?
Once the implants themselves are fitted to the jaw, it can take up to a month for the gums to heal, depending on the level of care, your age, and how many implants you have had fitted.
But it is important during this time to not disturb your implants, as the pressure applied to them at this stage can cause them to set at an unusual angle or to move.
When it comes to healing completely from the initial oral implant fitting and having the prosthetic tooth or teeth fitted, the process can take anywhere between 3-9 months.
How long do they last?
With the correct level of aftercare and a lack of complications, oral implants can last over 15 years.
But you will have to ensure that you treat the implants and the prosthetics as you would your regular teeth; brush them twice a day, floss them and, of course, attend checkups as and when directed by our dental team.
To ensure the longevity of your implants, you will also need to cut back on habits like smoking and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.
Can anyone have them fitted?
In a word, no.
Some people may be unsuitable for oral implants due to their dental health, their physical health, or other issues, such as the density of their jawbone.
When you come to our team at Spa Dental, we will always ensure that you have an adequate amount of jawbone for your implants to fuse. We will also enquire about your physical health since some issues, like osteoporosis, can cause complications with the implants fusing to your jaw.
